Instagram auto-posting: why you need a Business or Creator account

Instagram only allows automated posting to professional accounts linked to a Facebook Page. Here is how to switch in a few minutes.

Instagram's publishing API only works with professional accounts (Business or Creator) that are linked to a Facebook Page. Personal accounts cannot be posted to by any tool, so this is the first thing to check.

Switch to a professional account

  1. In the Instagram app open your profile, then Settings and privacy.
  2. Choose Account type and tools > Switch to professional account.
  3. Pick Business (or Creator) and a category. Switching is free and can be undone.

In the Instagram settings open Accounts Center or Sharing to other apps and connect the Facebook Page you manage. Automated posting goes through that link.

Every post needs an image

Instagram does not accept text-only feed posts. Auto Piko's paid plans create a matching image for each post; the free trial is text-only, so Instagram needs a paid plan.

Good to know

  • Captions can be up to 2,200 characters, but the first line matters most.
  • Images are published as JPEG, the only format Instagram's API accepts.
  • Up to 30 hashtags are allowed; 3 to 10 relevant ones work better.
